My Paper Sculpture

Egret
“Egret”, 12″x18″ painted, cut paper sculpture.

I created a body of work in “paper sculpture” in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At the time, I had not seen any other work by other artists in this medium. Since then, many fine artists have taken this medium to great heights.

A succulent garden frame. This one is resting on an easel at the entrance to the old Succulent Gardens shop.

The problem with this work is that it has to be mounted or framed to protect the fragile paper. I took it upon myself to learn how to make custom acrylic boxes to hold each sculpture. This expense was too much in the long run, and I had to stop making the sculptures. You can see images of some below.

The initial inspiration for the sculptures came from my travels to California from Maryland, where I lived. I visited a shop near Carmel. The shop’s name was something like Succulent Gardens. There was a beautiful collection of wooden frames filled with succulent plantings. The subtle colors were so beautiful. I based my first sculptures on these. Here is a photo I took of one of the little succulent gardens. They were meant to be hung on a garden wall or a wooden fence.
