n [Watch the Video of this painting from “The Landscape Illuminated” exhibit.] nA big volume of air shimmers from here on the cliff to there in the shining distance where the sun is making its way to setting in this painting “Big Sur, Big Sun”.nnUp here, one looks down to the sea through an ocean of space…glittering, glass-like space. The size of the atmosphere astounds you. Across the shimmering expanse of this ever-restless ocean we know there are other worlds: Hawaii, Tahiti, Japan, Australia. But they are far over the curve of the horizon where it is morning or mid day.nnHere, […]

From “The Landscape Illuminated” Exhibit: “Willow Wall”
nnnn[Watch the video] In 1883, French Impressionist Claude Monet, moved his family to the little hamlet of Giverny and began developing gardens of flowers and lily ponds, bridges and pathways, so many of the scenes that made their way into his iconic paintings. Little has changed of the house and Giverny since those early days. The gardens are restored and one can walk in the environment that inspired Monet into his old age and still inspires artists like myself today in 2012…nn“Willow Wall” (See Video Below), my large oil on canvas painting featured in my current exhibit “The Landscape Illuminated”, shows a curtain […]
“The Landscape Illuminated” Exhibit
The sun washes over the landscape, shining on the world without holding back, without withholding its light from one thing and giving to another. The good and the bad, the indifferent and the involved alike receive its illumination, its clarity, and its warmth. Sparkles of sunlight make their way through branches and brambles, hitting the ground soundly in a beam of dispassionate intent that inspires an intense passion for its beauty.nnThe landscape is illuminated, glows in a reality that we often take for granted, especially as we become accustomed to the beauty that surrounds us in this special place, the […]

Harboring a Secret Love
Perhaps it isn’t a secret anymore, now that I am posting it to the world. Or, maybe the world already saw what I did not see. In any case, I have just realized it myself: I’ve been harboring a secret love. For Monterey harbor. Going through my website, taking an inventory of the different subjects I’ve painted locally, I find Monterey right up there with eucalyptus and cypress. In the past week I’ve painted there three times, including the pink building with the white balcony.nnSlowly it dawns on me that, more and more, I find myself bombing down the bike […]
